What Medical Conditions Qualify for Social Security Disability?

Last updated: April 12, 2023

If you have a disability that prevents you from working, Social Security Disability Insurance may be available for you. If you want to receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, you need the following proof:

  • You are unable to continue working because of your disability.
  • You are unable to work in a different field because of your disability.
  • It will take you one year or longer to recover from your disability, or you will die from it.

You may be able to establish eligibility for disability benefits more easily if you have a disability listed in Social Security's Blue Book.

Medical Conditions That Qualify You for SSDI Benefits

According to the Social Security Administration, there are several impairments of medical conditions listed in the Blue Book that interfere with a person's ability to work and prevent them from working. Several types of disabilities are covered by the Social Security's Blue Book including:

  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, arthritis, back injuries, and fibromyalgia are among the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions
  • Heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, angina, and abnormal heart rhythms are among the cardiovascular conditions
  • Sense and speech issues, such as vision and hearing loss
  • Inflammatory respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pulmonary hypertension, and asthma
  • Multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, neuralgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome are all neurological disorders
  • Depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, autism, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and intellectual disabilities are just some of the mental health conditions that can affect people
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, HIV/AIDS, and lupus are among the immune system disorders
  • Burns and dermatitis are common skin problems
  • Several digestive tract disorders, including liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and short bowel syndrome, can affect the digestive tract
  • Chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, and other genitourinary conditions
  • There are many types of cancer, such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, breast cancer, and others
  • Anemia, thrombosis, hemostasis, and thrombophilia are all hematological diseases

What Happens If Your Disability Is Not Listed in the SSA Blue Book?

Every medical condition is not necessary to be included in the Blue Book for a person to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance. According to the Blue Book, all disabilities are equally severe, regardless of their severity level. You would need to prove your condition meets that definition.
